Day 30 Katherine Gorge

The Muirs finally arrived after experiencing car trouble along the way. Unfortunately, they will be spending a few days here waiting for their car to be fixed. We drowned their sorrows last night/celebrated getting together in the beautiful Top End. I think there might have been singing. Not sure. Maybe it was Handbrake? Memory hazy. Anyway, their car is towed away and we arrive at about 9:10 for the 9:00 departure, which is a bit early when you’re with the Muir clan. The boat trip is up the river through the first three of what we’re told are over nine gorges along the Katherine river. The views of the Gorge walls are splendid and make up for some lack-luster commentary from our guide. After each gorge, we disembark and walk a few hundred metres past some rapids to board another boat for the trip up the next gorge. We are also treated to rock art believed to be more than 35,000 years old and an explanation of its meaning by our guide. On the final walk we swim for about half an hour and that is, of course, the highlight for the kids. Dinner is a more subdued affair but Barra‘ and Beef demand Beer (and a few reds). It’s been a great catch up but it’s time for us to go. Tomorrow we depart for WA and Kununurra.
